Greetings! Hope you all had a great bank holiday. I had a wonderful time at Sounds From The Other City – big shouts outs to all the crew involved in making our Islington Mill Courtyard stage the spectacular session it was. And a big shout out to all the massive at the front for A Guy Called Gerald’s equally spectacular live show – I had a right ball! A particularly emotional snooker world champion had me in tears on Monday evening – but it was all worth it!
It's obviously never nice to have to say goodbye to a musical hero of any sort, but there's a lot to be said for the idea that much like the majority of the indie music landscape, Piccadilly Records wouldn't be what it is today without the influence of Steve Albini. From “In Utero”, “Surfer Rosa” and “Rid Of Me” in the 80's and 90's all the way up to SunnO)))'s mindblowing 2019 outing, “Life Metal” or one of Barry’s favourite pieces of music of all time, Godspeed's “Rockets Fall On Rocket Falls” from the “Yanqui U.X.O” album; it's all gold, and it couldn't have been done by anyone but Albini. And that's not even mentioning his many musical triumphs in both Big Black and Shellac (or his more recent work with Cloud Nothings). Needless to say it's a big blow and Albini will be sorely missed by us and the rest of the music community.
Onto brighter news and this week’s new releases are shaping up rather nicely. We’ve a new album from long serving Falkirk indie rockers Arab Strap, Vancouver’s Potatohead People develop more of their soul infused boom bap for Bastard Jazz, and Jordan Rakei gifts us possibly his best album to date via “The Loop”.
It’s a big week for Oldham – both the county in Kentucky and the Manchester adjacent city – with heavy metallers Knocked Loose and ambient / gothic folk / post-classical songstress Keeley Forsyth representing the former and the latter, coincidently, both on album number three.
Manchester is also well rep’d this week too – Luke Una inaugurating his E Soul Cultura label with Transmission Towers, musical genius Contours dropping a beautiful album on Music From Memory and Jason Boardman’s Before I Die enlisting the unique talents of Klangkollektor. Meanwhile, (Salford) Irlam’s primo hardcore mischief maker DJ Absolutely Shit busts up yer bassbins with part 2 of their Red Laser-released EPs – “Memoires Of A Crust Monster” (which did a ton of damage when I played it at SFTOC at the weekend).
You might have missed a brilliantly curated compilation on Gomma – “Dancefloor Gems Volume 2”, which covers the label’s development between 2001-2010. Y2K revivalists you need this in your life! Also on the revisitation tip – check the Diamonds And Pearls EP from last week if Dutch piano house is your current penchant.
B-Edits hit us with their second instalment – a double header of tropical funk / Latin disco business. As elusive as they are imperative, we’re yet to see who’s behind these cult adored edits, but I’m sure time will tell!
Party season continues this weekend with Open To Close throwing a dock off garden party at The DBA on Saturday afternoon / evening. I’ll be spinning tunes alongside local superstar Rhod Parry (who did a mighty fine job of closing proceedings here in the shop on Record Store Day…), and it’s the Manchester debut of Mexican house princess Paurro who I’m personally mega buzzed to see. There’s tons of other DJs on and weather’s looking mighty fine too, so no excuses really! All details are HERE.
